Why Your Iron Is Your Best Sewing FriendWritten by d'Italia
For the uninitiated, a simple household clothing iron is a basic clothing necessity for looking sharp and keeping clothes crisp, but it can be far more than that for the avid sewer. Of course no clothing care tool bag would be complete without an iron, but if you haven’t yet realised how big a role a clothing iron can play in your sewing regimen, it’s time you started expanding your iron’s horizons!
Using an Iron for Sewing Prep First of all, you need to make sure that the fabrics and patches you’re sewing with are completely wrinkle-free and smooth. Working with wrinkled or simply unironed pieces can be tricky because they are not at full stretch and will be more apt to expanding afterward beyond what you had expected when you iron or wash the entire garment. This, of course, also goes along with a general need for using clean, manicured pieces, as everything should be washed as well before applying. Non-Stitch Sewing Irons are also necessary for stitch-free options like fusible tape. The high heat and pressing causes the tape to melt, and without an iron you’ll find yourself tossing garments into the oven to get those quick patches!
