When buying fabric to make an outfit, or even buying off the rack, the first question that comes to mind is “does this colour suit me?”.  A good question, as the wrong colour can make you look tired, old or even unwell.  With the multitude of beautiful colours now available in the fashion world, you can rest assured that the right colour is out there for you.

Being confident that your clothing is making the most of your figure and complexion will lead to feeling happy and confident within yourself.  You owe it to yourself to choose carefully.

Determining correct style and colour is second nature to a trained fashionista. However, to the average person it can be very confusing and daunting.  Where possible, seek the advice of a trained and objective sales assistant, such as the experienced staff at d'Italia who will be more than happy to guide you to the best choice.  This will take a lot of the guess work out of your decision and make the whole process a lot less stressful.

In determining the best colour for you it is important to take note of the following guidelines:
  • The best colour for you will brighten your complexion and diminish blemishes (acne, scarring, dark circles)
  • Look for a good contrast to your complexion – it is important not to have a colour too close to your skin tone
  • If a colour makes your skin look red, yellow or overly pale, the colour or shade is not right for you.  Experiment with red, yellow and blue based variants of the colour you wish to wear until you find the option that looks best.
  • If you have a more voluptuous figure, think about wearing mid to dark tones rather than overly pastel tones – these will flatter your curves

In additions to these guidelines, you may like to consider the following:
  • For evening functions, think about how the colour will look under artificial lighting
  • For daytime functions, be careful not to wear a fabric that is designed for evening wear
  • For guests and Mothers of the Bride and Groom, traditional bridal shades (white and cream) should be avoided so as to not upset the bride!
  • For petite or larger figures, consider how the print/pattern on the fabric works for your figure – is the print large enough or small enough to suit you?
  • What are the hot new season colours?

Remember – if you are doubtful about whether a particular colour is right for you, ask a professional.  Their advice is invaluable and impartial. They will take into account all of the issues raised above, and, unlike your friends, will not just direct you to a colour they “like”.  Trust them and the end result will be that much better!
