"Unless you’re a lucky size 6 or a 7, you would always need, as a general rule, two lengths for a pair of pants. By lengths, we mean the finished lengths of the fabric, plus a little bit extra for the hems and seams. When taking measurements for pants, I always like to take it from the waist, even if somebody usually wears them on the hips. That just gives you a little bit of extra to play with. We start at the waist and take it all the way to the floor. In Melissa’s case, the finished length is around 95 centimetres. Now this is assuming she’s not going to wear really high heels - in which case, you would add extra. We then add an extra 10 centimetres for hems and seams, which gives us 105 centimeters. Double that number is 2 metres 10. So, in Melissa’s case, 2 metres 10 is what we would be recommending as a fabric length when making a pair of pants." - Suzanne and Melissa of d'Italia
