"There is a misconception about georgettes being drapey. Yes georgettes are very drapey, and most girls will come in the store and say ‘I need a georgette for my drapey dress’. A georgette is not always necessary, as a silk satin will do this also. With a silk satin, your dress will have this beautiful lustrous shine. If the satin is cut correctly, especially if you want to have drapey look, you’d always want to cut on the bias. Cutting on the bias will mean that you’ll get a beautiful drape. If you put a georgette over the top, you’ll lose that beautiful satin. A georgette is drapey, but it’s not necessary for the dress to have as much drape with the georgette. The georgette will add to it, but will make it duller. The satin has a beautiful shine which you don’t want to take away unless you’re afraid of the shininess – which, if this is the case, you can use a georgette.

Georgettes and satins both have the same quality of drape, so it’s not necessary to always have a georgette. If you do decide to have a georgette, there are other options of having an overlay. You can use a chiffon or a satin chiffon. Satin chiffon is actually quite beautiful because it has that sheen on it, and this, will still give you that beautiful luscious glowing shine. If you don’t want that, you can always use the reverse side of a satin. Lots of top quality designers will use the reverse side if they don’t like the shiny side. There are many options to having a beautiful drapey dress, and this can all be done without using a georgette." - Melissa from d’Italia
